18th&19th: Heritage Open Days

Winterbourne Medieval Barn

18th & 19th September 2021, 10am - 5pm

Heritage Open Days celebrate England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties across the country that are usually closed to the public or charge for admission. This year's theme is Edible England. https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk

Winterbourne Medieval Barn, built in 1342, is a unique surviving example of a great medieval Barn built by a gentry family. Constructed using green timber methods, the cutting edge technology of its time, it is a fine example of this construction and one of the largest and earliest raised-cruck barns.

As part of the national heritage scheme, Winterbourne Barn and St Michaels church will be open for free to all visitors. You can explore the magnificent medieval barn and productive vegetable garden. Materials will be available for you to have a go at botanical drawing. Local artist Holly Dunham will be completing a painting on site and will be available to offer hints and tips. There’ll be plenty on offer for families across the weekend. Drop into the Cartshed Cookery School to find out all about medieval cooking and have a taste of days gone by! A pop-up cafe will also be open for more modern tastes.

All activities are free of charge although we are asking visitors to book a morning or afternoon slot online so that we can control numbers if we need to in line with covid restrictions at the time. Morning: 10am to 1.30pm. Afternoon: 1.30 – 5pm. Please arrive at any time within your time slot. Limited car parking is available onsite. Plenty of cycle parking. The Barn is a short ten minute walk from Winterbourne High Street where more car parking is available.

Neighbouring St Michael's church will also be open (check opening times on HODs website), and the Bradley Brook nature reserve behind makes a great place to add to your day out.
