Talk: Architecture of Old Houses in Southern Glos
Winterbourne Medieval Barn
We are delighted to welcome architectural historian Linda Hall to the Barn to share her extensive knowledge of local architecture and the clues it gives us about a building's age/past.
Based on research she began over 50 years ago for an undergraduate dissertation, this talk looks at the historic building styles and materials of local houses, both town and country, from medieval times to the late 1600s. It includes a comparison of the roof structure of Winterbourne Barn with several local houses, two of them also tree-ring dated. Are they younger or older than the barn? You'll have to come along to find out!
Linda has been involved with Winterbourne Medieval Barn for many years. She has previously served as a Trustee and is still an active volunteer at the Barn. Probably most notably, Linda was instrumental in discovering the barn's true age (through knowledge gained from her studies), and in highlighting the rarity and importance of a genuine medieval barn in the area. Thanks to this, Linda and a team of dedicated locals raised awareness of the plight of the Barn and helped to save it for the community, so that it could be restored to the beautiful building you see today.
Linda Hall studied archaeology and history at Southampton University, followed by vernacular architecture in south Gloucestershire, and she has had books published on both vernacular buildings and period house fittings & fixtures.
The bar will be open for refreshments from 6.30pm. Cash and card payments accepted. Free parking on site.
Tickets are £7.50. Book online direct on Ticketsource or via the Barn website. The talk will also be live-streamed on zoom - we will email you the Zoom joining link before 6pm.
