The Arts Society Lecture: Cantiones Sacrae 1575

Chipping Sodbury Town Hall

Cantiones Sacrae 1575 - The Lives and Music of Tallis and Byrd, by Patrick Craig

Patrick Craig is a Vicar Choral at St Paul’s Cathedral. For twenty years he combined this with an international career singing over a thousand concerts with the world-renowned early music consort The Tallis Scholars. He also sings with the award-winning group The Cardinall’s Musick. He founded and conducts this country’s leading all-female professional choir, Aurora Nova. He has conducted concerts for the BBC Proms, the Brighton, Lichfield and Aldeburgh Festivals, and with the City of London Sinfonia.

Patrick’s career with The Tallis Scholars and The Cardinall’s Musick has been dominated by the music of Tallis and Byrd. Cantiones Sacrae, the first ever volume of English printed music, contains some of their most glorious works. Dedicated to Queen Elizabeth it offers a glimpse into the turbulent political times that both composers lived through. He will explore the lives of the two men who created it and play many of its treasures.

We meet in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall at 10.30 for 11.00 a.m. and 1.30 for 2.00 p.m. Tea and coffee are available half an hour before the lectures.

Visitors welcome: £6. Booking essential - email below.
