Talk: The Piers of Weston-Super-Mare
Winterbourne Medieval Barn
Many of us will have visited the Grand Pier at Weston, either as children or with our own children and grandchildren. You probably heard about the devastating fire which occurred in 2008, but did you know an almost identical fire happened in 1930?
We are delighted to welcome Carole Darling back to the Barn for another fascinating talk, this time about the Piers of Weston-super-Mare. Born and raised in Weston, Carole knows so much about the piers, and is a very entertaining speaker. Come and find out more about the weird and wonderful things that went on there!
Most of us perhaps regard a visit to Weston as just a fun day out, but what made Laurie Lee describe it as “loaded with freaks and fancies, a whole series of nightmares for a penny”? Did you know that the Old Pier was designated as HMS Birnbeck in World War ll, where the “Wheezers and Dodgers” tackled some of the strangest tasks in the history of warfare?
If you've been to Weston in the last few years you will perhaps have seen the sorry state the Old Pier is in. But there are at last efforts to save it. Come and find out more.
Tickets £7.50 online in advance or on the door. Seating unreserved. Doors and bar open at 6.30pm. Refreshments available on arrival and during interval. Cash and card payments accepted. Free parking on site.
This talk is also available to watch live on Zoom - advanced booking online essential.
