Winterbourne Medieval Barn
See inside our beautiful heritage building...FOR FREE! The Barn is normally only open for ticketed events, so this is a great change to explore this Grade II* listed building...and find out what else goes on.
Winterbourne Medieval Barn was built in 1342, and is a unique surviving example of a great medieval Barn built by a gentry family. Constructed using green timber methods, the cutting edge technology of the time, it is a magnificent example of the medieval builders' craft.
Come and find out about the history of this wonderful barn and admire the original medieval roof timbers. Discover how and why it was built, and learn the story of how it was all almost lost in the 1980s, then saved by local supporters in the 1990s, and how it is used today!
The Barn will be freely open from 1pm - 4pm, so please arrive at any time within this time slot and stay for as long as you like. You can look around at your leisure, and read the information boards, and some of our volunteer tour guides will be on hand to answer any questions you have about our beautiful site. Our pop-up café will be open, with a small selection of drinks and snacks. Cash and card payments are accepted. Free parking on site. The Barn is fully accessible for wheelchairs.
You may wish to combine your visit to the Barn with a trip to St Michael’s Church next door. Their opening times are subject to change so please check with them in advance if you are arranging a visit especially. The Monks Pool Nature Reserve is just behind the Barn and church, so you might like to explore the local landscape and wildlife. But please be aware that the Barn car park will be locked when the site closes, so do not leave your car there and go for a long walk!
